Working the numbers – On Demand Algorithms

Several On-Demand companies leverage Big Data — they have sophisticated databases and algorithms in squeezing out as much profit as possible. This is at the expense of the freelancer. Even though they have changed their independent contractors to employees. (These include, Luxe, a valet service, Shyp, a shipping service, Eden, a technology service and even Instacart, delivery service), they have not given their employees the type of benefits most W-2s deserve. They are capping the number of hours an employees work each week and having them work less than 30 hours a week. The numbers below indicate Uber drivers are working less than the typical cab driver. This obviously is hurting the Freelancer.

This is accomplished using little data – leveraging scheduling software that assists management in keeping these hours down. This is similar to the software Uber uses to maximize profits – and incorporating surge pricing on customers.

Controlling workers hours impacts the take home pay of the Freelancer and often requires them take on another another job. The goal of this site is to help the Free agent find other opportunities.
